Turning the Page: From Comfort to Meaning (by Mark Thompson)


Mark Thompson, an experienced IT Director, felt a growing emptiness in his successful career as he neared his mid-50s. Despite having achieved comfort and prestige, he longed for something more meaningful. Inspired by a conversation with an old friend about a project connecting families with elderly relatives, Mark realized his passion for technology could be reignited with a purpose-driven project.


He left his secure job and eventually started an educational tech platform, working alongside passionate young developers. Though the change was uncertain, Mark found a renewed sense of purpose, no longer asking, "Is this all there is?"


 

Decision Paralysis -> Redefine Identity (by Cara Steenstra)


Decisions.

Decisions.

Decisions.


I was weighed down by options, and it was hard to breathe.

I felt unworthy of having options, and it weighed heavy on my heart.


I was made redundant from a job that I loved (I loved my team, my manager, and the work that I was doing). It hit me harder than I imagined. Being someone who trains people in resilience and mindset change, I still struggled a bit to come to terms with the sudden shift in status.


Particularly when I was proud of my work. It was a huge part of my identity. Moving forward meant having to redefine my identity.


So why was I weighed down by decisions?

The biggest fork in the road for me was whether to look for another job or to go back to working for myself as an entrepreneur/freelancer.


Whilst I was trying out for all options, I was also not doing much in any of the options. My energy was low, my motivation was lacking and I just felt I was in limbo.


Having choices can be a burden.

And I needed to do something about this conundrum that I was in.


Then I remembered that no matter which path I chose, I will NEVER know what the OTHER path would have led me to. Then, why would it matter anyway?


So I set about redefining my identity.

I looked at what I had (gratitude), I explored what I love doing (strengths) and examined what I cared deeply about (values). Armed with my gratitude, strengths and values, I started to actively let people know what I wanted to do - learning and development projects. And all of a sudden, opportunities came pouring in.


My energy was restored, I was excited about doing “work” again even though it was no longer in the form of a “job”.


By reframing DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS into GRATITUDE, STRENGTHS and VALUES, my career transition became something I was no longer fearful and anxious about, but something I am full of hope and excitement for!
