This marks our third #lamsquare28daychallenge of the year, and this time, we're focusing on something a little different: self-care. While the idea of self-care may vary from person to person, indulging in expensive items or lavish vacations doesn't always equate to joy, peace, and health. Rather, integrating self-care practices into our daily routines is what truly matters.
So, what exactly is self-care and why is it important?
Self-care, as beautifully explained by Raphailia Michael, MA, refers to any deliberate activity aimed at nurturing our mental, emotional, and physical health. Despite its simplicity in theory, it's often overlooked. Engaging in good self-care not only enhances mood and reduces anxiety but also fosters healthy relationships with oneself and others.
It's equally important to understand what self-care isn't. It's not about forcing ourselves into activities we dislike or that drain us. As Agnes Wainman aptly puts it, self-care is about refueling ourselves, not depleting our energy. It's not a selfish act but rather a necessary practice for maintaining overall well-being.
Are you ready to embark on this journey?
This challenge is a personal endeavour, but feel free to invite friends and family to join you. It's free, and the setup allows you to work at your own pace. Choose activities that resonate with you and commit to practicing them daily. The goal is to foster self-learning, personal growth, and mutual support within the group. Remember, even small changes can have a profound impact on reclaiming control over our lives, time, and health.
Here are some guidelines to get you started:
Invite a friend: Sharing your goals boosts accountability. Gather a supportive group of friends or join our Instagram or Facebook community.
Plan it: Use the provided self-care checklist or planner to schedule your activities. Commit to following through on your plan.
It's okay to miss a day: Life happens, and that's alright. If you miss a day, find opportunities to make it up, like a 5-minute bedtime meditation.
Choose activities you love: Select activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Later, incorporate them into your routine.
Stay present: Practice mindfulness during your self-care activities. Be aware of your feelings, intentions, and the benefits you gain from each experience.
Download our Reflection Journal to help you prepare for this challenge and make the most out of your journey to self-care.
Although self-care means different things to different people, there is a basic checklist that we can use for ideas. Utilize the following printable PDF to fill out your own self-care checklist or planner. Set up a 28-day self-care (or even just 14-day) routine and observe how you feel before and after. If you are looking for ideas for meditation, yoga, or some simple exercises, you can find them in our previous Mind-Body-Balance Challenge.
I’ll be logging my progress on our Facebook group (Lamsquare Learning Community) and Instagram (@deane.lam) everyday, feel free to use the hashtag #lamsquare28daychallenge to share your progress with us.
